The curriculum is one that provides for a smooth transition from grade to grade, ultimately, preparing students for success at the secondary level. It includes all the major subjects: religion, mathematics, science, social studies, language arts (including English, literature, composition, reading and spelling), general music, art, Spanish (grades K-8), physical education, and computers. The scope of each subject provides a coherent course of study for all students.
Grades K through 3 are instructed in a self-contained classroom environment. Grades 4 and 5 implement several subject-based transitions, and grades six, seven and eight feature departmental instruction with courses conducted by faculty who are specialists in their fields.
Religion and Liturgy
The study of religion is an integral part of the curriculum for all students. It is the mission of Lourdes to bear witness to the gospel of Jesus Christ by assisting each family in nurturing in its children the love of God, the love of neighbor, and sound moral values.
Catholic students prepare for the sacraments of First Penance and First Communion in the second grade and for Confirmation in the eighth grade. All students attend Mass regularly during the school year on first Fridays, holy days and special school celebrations. Reconciliation is also scheduled during the school year.
All students enrolled at Lourdes are required to participate in all religious activities. Baptized Catholics are provided numerous opportunities to receive the Sacraments.
Testing and Report Cards
Standardized testing is conducted in accordance with Archdiocesan guidelines for students in grades 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7. Standardized tests measure achievement. Students in grades 3 and 7 are also given an "Abilities" test. The tests are administered annually. The results are shared with the parents.
Report cards are issued quarterly: In early November, late January, late March and at the end of the school year. Progress in first through third grades is indicated by a mark of E (Excellent), G (Good), S (Satisfactory), I (Improvement Needed), and U (Unsatisfactory). Students in grades 4-8 are graded on a scale of "A" to "F" for academic subjects and E (Excellent), G (Good), S (Satisfactory), I (Improvement Needed), and U (Unsatisfactory) for music, art, computers and physical education. The numerical equivalents of the grades are as follows:
A = 93 - 100 B = 85 - 92 C = 77 - 84 D = 70 -76 F = 69 and below
Teacher conferences are scheduled with the parents of all students at the end of the first quarter. Students in grades 6-8 are expected to attend the conference with their parents. A teacher conference may be scheduled at any time by calling the school office.
Progress Reports are sent home at mid-quarter to any student in grades 4-8 whose grades in any subject change significantly and/or need improvement. | |
