Pope Francis’ message for Lent identifies three things that we need to recognize in order to experience the closeness to Christ that we all seek. The first is the recognition that “The other person is a gift.”
I love this idea – that each person we encounter is a gift presented to us. How often, I wonder, do I totally miss that? How often do I pass someone in the lobby without stopping to say hello, or to ask how one is doing? We all get so busy – so wrapped up in the “stuff” we think we have to do that sometimes we don’t even notice the people around us. Then there are the people who get on our last nerves. There are the people with whom we disagree about almost everything, or the people who always have something negative to say. Those people we purposely avoid. We say things like, “I just can’t take any more of her negativity in my life.” or “I can’t deal with him today.” It’s difficult to see those people as gifts. I wonder what I’ve missed by never resolving that disagreement with the person who avoids looking at me when I walk by. I wonder what I didn’t learn from the person who can never seem to find something positive to say. God has put those people in my life to teach me something – maybe humility or the importance of forgiveness. Unfortunately, I was so busy avoiding unpleasantness that I missed an opportunity to see the gift that other person could have been to me. I love presents and I love talking to people, so for Lent this year, I’m going to keep my eyes open for the unnoticed or unacknowledged people in my world – the unopened gifts – then I’m going to listen to them and talk to them. Oh, and those of you who are so obviously treasures in my life – I will make sure I let you know that I know how lucky I am to have been given the gift of you.
“Each life that we encounter is a gift deserving acceptance, respect and love.” Pope Francis
