I promise you this is a true story! This morning we had golf clubs, coolers filled with food and suitcases lined up on the front lawn so that my husband could pack them into the van. He and my second son Patrick were planning to get an early start so that they could get down to the Northern Neck of Virginia with some of this beautiful day left. Unfortunately, today is also trash day. He is now standing next to a huge pile of garbage that contains crushed golf clubs, smashed turkeys and compacted coolers with unrecognizable contents - oh and the garbage of all of our neighbors. What a great way to start the Thanksgiving break! As my daughter said, “This will be a funny story some day.” Maybe just not today. Where can I find the gratitude in this situation? I am grateful that my husband does not know that the first thing I did when I heard this was laugh. I am grateful that my suitcase is in my car. I am grateful that we will not go hungry, because I can go back to the store and buy what we need.
What I really wanted to write today was Thank You! Thank you for sharing your children with us every day. They make us laugh and cry, and their sweetness can be overwhelming. Their curiosity and wonder at the smallest things ensure that we are aware of what’s really important. Their openness and their unfettered joy make our days full. Thank you, teachers, for your dedication and your willingness to try just about anything to make this inclusive school flourish. Thank you to my old friends who led me to Lourdes 13 years ago, and thank you to the Pastors who have let me do this job the way I think it should be done. Thank you, Mr. Long, for hashing it all out with me, and for reminding us all that what we do must alway be about the children.
“When you rise in the morning, give thanks for the light, for your life, for your strength. Give thanks for your food and for the joy of living. If you see no reason to give thanks, the fault lies in yourself.” - Tecumseh
