How many parenting books do you think there are out there? Every one of them addresses parenting as a job - a series of tasks that we perform to reach the ultimate goal - the formation of a successful adult. There are do’s and don’t’s, there are lists of “Ten Best” and “Ten Worst”. We are told to be positive problem solvers, active listeners, affirmers, activity administrators and task jugglers. We are told to be Tiger Moms and Free Range Parenters. When did being a parent get reduced to just another occupation? When did the focus of what we do with and for our children become all about “creating” accomplished, successful adults? Isn’t the essence of being a parent the unconditional, inexplicable love that we have for our children? Aren’t the seminal moments of parenting found not in the graduations or the soccer championships, but in the time spent reading stories or making cookies together? If we are focusing our efforts on making sure our children are people who will be accepted into the right social circles, the right high schools or even the right colleges, aren’t we missing the whole point of being a parent? Aren’t we sacrificing all of the todays for some vision we have created for our children’s tomorrows?
It can be so hard not to get caught up in the pressure to “make” our kids into something we want them to be! We have to actively resist the temptation to skip the little things - holding hands, digging for worms, playing dress up or pretend - for some vision we have of a finished product that will show everyone how good we are at our jobs. Remind yourself - not a job - but a relationship - not a list of 100 tasks - but a million small moments - hugs and kisses, laughter and tears, stories and games. A relationship like no other we will ever have - truly a gift.
“When you look in your mother’s eyes, you are seeing unconditional love.” Albom
