One MOORE thing...

One MOORE thing...  (8/31/19)

8/31/2019

I hope that you are all enjoying the Labor Day weekend!  I have a few reminders about deadlines and information about our first day of school, Tuesday, September 3!

The teachers and staff have been hard at work getting everything ready.  It was a crazy week trying to get everything completed on time.  As is the case with most jobs that you plan and work so hard for, things are running a small bit behind with the Discovery Center.  You will be able to see our progress, but the room is not completely finished.  We will spend the next 2 weeks finalizing and preparing the room for use.  The teachers enjoyed learning about some of the new Discovery Center tools and sharing what they learned with their colleagues.  We have an outstanding group of dedicated and hardworking teachers who are so excited about all the new learning that will take place in our Discovery Center.  I will share more information at Back to School Night and we will plan a ribbon cutting event for late September.

This week the faculty and I had time to meet and discuss plans for the year, pray together and ask for God's grace and guidance, and to thank God for the blessing that is this job that we do everyday.  We can't wait to get back to work and to welcome everyone "Home" to OLOL!

We are starting our year with an orientation hour:

First Day of School is Tuesday, September 3.  Doors will be open at 7:30am.  School starts at 8am with our "Welcome Home Orientation Hour" from 8-9am.  Visit the classroom, meet your child's teacher, visit with other parents, and enjoy coffee and refreshments in the library media center! We will have opening of day prayers at 9am.  Students will be dismissed at 12:10 and there is after school care available.  Please register for ASC: https://ololasc.net/

HOT LUNCH ORDERING IS ALMOST CLOSED: If you want to order hot lunch for "First Day" Chick-fil-A or "Last Day" Ledo Pizza, you have a few hours.  All lunch ordering will be closed tomorrow (Sun., 9/1).  Order now

If you ordered uniform pieces from OLOL earlier than this past week, we will have completed orders ready for pick up on Tuesday.  Mrs. Kiyonaga will email you when other orders are ready for pick up and/or we will send items home with students once school is underway.

If you have not done so, please take a minute to complete the family survey that was sent out for the 2nd time on 8/25/19.   Under the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, all schools are required to provide poverty and residency information to determine eligibility for federal education services.  Thank you to the 85 families who have completed this task.  We still need about 50 families to respond.  This is due to us by Sept. 4 so that we can compile and submit the information as required.

Check out the front page for information about our Back to School Picnic on Friday, Sept. 6!

Enjoy the beautiful weekend! All of us at OLOL are looking forward to seeing you back at school on Tuesday!

Best,
Ms. Moore

Hello from a bustling OLOL!  We are just completing carpet installation in the front lobby, 1st grade, and kindergarten rooms.  We have our contractors hard at work in our new Discovery Center and next week we start the installation of some new safety features for our building.  School is just around the bend!

I wanted to remind everyone of the things that need to be done before we start back to school on Sept. 3.

Thanks to everyone who has filled out the family survey, ordered hot lunch, ordered uniform items, and signed up for Latin in grades 5-8.  There is still time to complete all these tasks if you haven't done so already.

Family Survey needs to be completed by September 4.   This was sent to your primary email earlier last Friday.

Preschool uniform update for girls:  We now have the navy polo dress available for sale on our website.  We are offering a YXXS (3T) in our preschool items.

For all families we will make exchanges easy and work to get whatever size is needed.

Mr. Long and I are working to get the first order of uniform items to school and we can now tell you that items that were ordered by this morning will be available for pick up next week starting on Tuesday, August 20, between 9am-4pm.  Please remember to place your uniform orders soon so we can be sure to have items available before school begins.  We will have items available for you to check sizes and fit for your child.  You can stop by the front office this week W - F between 9am-4pm.

During used uniform sales you can also stop by to check out new items and check for sizes and fit for your child.  Orders must be placed online.

We will have used uniform items available for sale Friday, Aug. 23 between 9am-1pm and Monday & Tuesday, August 26 & 27 between 3pm-5pm.   (Payment accepted: cash or check ONLY)

Hot lunch orders are due by Friday, August 30.  This is the only order time for the semester.

Latin enrollment for students in grades 5 - 8 must be completed by Sunday, Aug. 25 so that we can make final decisions about classes.

Thanks for all your attention to these back to school items. It's a wonderfully busy time of year!  I hope you and your children are looking forward to the start of the year as much as we are at OLOL.

Best,
Ms. Moore

One MOORE thing...  (8/8/19)

Hello to all families and friends of Our Lady of Lourdes!  This summer I started sending our school families some follow up emails titled "One MOORE thing..."  What actually started from the need to correct a mistake became an idea for a fun way to communicate with our OLOL community.  I am sure it is the same at most of your jobs, but there always seems to be one more thing to say or one more reminder to share.  I hope that this blog page is something that will help to keep communication flowing between home and school and be the place where I can share with you reminders, announcements, fun activities at school, resources for parents, updates, and error corrections (yep, I will make mistakes sometimes... I tell Mr. Long that I don't make them, but we all do even when we work really hard to get things right.  How we handle mistakes is a measure of the person we are and the person we are trying to be.  We strive for perfection, but only our Lord is truly perfect).

This week I sent out a letter to all families that had lots of information about upcoming school plans and lots of items for parents to complete in the next few weeks.  Here are some reminders and updates:
  • remember to order First Day and/ or Last Day lunch by Aug. 30
  • remember to order milk by Aug. 30 so we can have the correct amount ordered and delivered.
  • Lunch and milk start on Sept. 9
  • the Back to School Night date was not written correctly in my letter- the date is Wednesday, Sept. 11 starting at 6pm.
  • remember to order your preschool uniforms!  We will also be offering the navy blue polo dress for girls.  I am in the process of getting the pricing information and creating the item for our school store.  It will hopefully be available online soon.
  • remember to order your K-8 PE uniform, polo shirt, or sweats if needed.
  • We are also trying to get some PE, polo, and preschool uniform items in stock into the school so that we can fill orders and also have some items available for parents to see to determine proper sizing.  All orders placed so far will be available for pick up the week of Aug. 19.  I will send more information about exact pick up dates.  Please do not come to school to pick up anything before I contact you again, the order receipts may show the order ready within 5 days, but until we get our first shipment the dates on your receipt are not accurate.

IMPORTANT POLICY CHANGE for parent volunteers from the ADW:
  • Please use this link to see our webpage and get all the information about the change in the Child Protection Program through the Archdiocese of Washington.  This will affect all current families that have gone through background checks but have not been fingerprinted.  Any family volunteer that has not been fingerprinted but has complied with all the other steps to completing the Child Protection Program will have until Jan. 1, 2020 to be fingerprinted or they will not be able to volunteer after that date.  CLICK HERE TO FIND ALL THE INFORMATION

FAMILY SURVEY- coming to your email soon:
  • In a day or two you will receive an email with a link to a very important survey form.  It is a simple form to fill out and won't take you more than a few minutes.  It is part of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 and all schools are required to provide poverty and residency information to determine eligibility for federal education services.  It is important to have 100% participation from our families because it will help us secure the most federal and state funds (which supports reading programs, technology and textbooks, building improvements, etc.) for the children in our Catholic school.
