Welcome to Our Lady of Lourdes

Dear Friends and Visitors,

Welcome to the Our Lady of Lourdes School website. We hope you will explore the site, and begin to get a sense of the school community that is Our Lady of Lourdes. OLOL is a Catholic School, established in 1941 by the School Sisters of Saint Francis. Students begin school in our Little Group Program which serves three year olds. Our Pre-K classes are for students who will attend Kindergarten the following year. These classes are kept small, so that students receive lots of attention and support as they navigate the beginnings of their school experience.

Children in the Little Group and Pre-K are very much a part of the school community, and they come to love school, their teachers, their older buddies, and all the wonderful experiences they have. We have an outstanding Kindergarten classroom in which our younger students are introduced to academics and receive the differentiated instruction that they need at this age. Students in first through eighth grade participate in an age-appropriate academic program that is based on the Standards of the Archdiocese of Washington, DC.

In 2015 we were named a National Blue Ribbon School. This award recognizes many indicators of academic excellence, including standardized test scores that far exceed the national average and academic programs that reflect best practices. Our Lady of Lourdes welcomes all students. We strive to help each child become the best student and person they can be. Our success sends a strong message - that academic excellence is enhanced when a school community is diverse in every way.

A challenging academic program prepares all students for admission to Catholic, private and public high schools. Our graduates from the Class of 2022 were all admitted to at least one of the area’s Catholic high schools to which they applied. Our graduates win merit scholarships and enroll in honors and AP classes during their freshman year.

In a fast-paced world that pushes children to grow up too fast, Our Lady of Lourdes School faculty and administrators are determined to allow our students to remain children as long as they are in our care. We have an extensive program of service that involves students at all grade levels, and we recognize that every single person deserves to be treated with great kindness and care.

We encourage you to call and make an appointment to visit our school. Come and experience for yourself the community, enthusiasm, and dedication to faith and learning at Our Lady of Lourdes School.

Mission & Philosophy

Our Lady of Lourdes School provides a solid foundation in the Catholic faith, fosters academic excellence, and educates children to be successful leaders who serve the world.

This mission statement was developed in 2008. At the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year, our mission statement was re-evaluated and it was determined that it should remain as written.

Spiritual development of the student is the primary purpose of Catholic education. Academic excellence is pursued in the context of this development. In every subject area teachers incorporate knowledge and skills that will enable students to be good citizens and be of service to their school, parish, and the larger community. The goals of academic development are inseparable from the development of spiritually healthy students who become responsible young adults.

Our values are mirrored in the goals of our programs and in their implementation. We continually endeavor to re-evaluate and renew our commitment to our faith and to a rigorous educational experience for all children in our care. We accept the challenge to reflect the mandate given to us by the Church to teach and live the Word of God.

All students in the school participate in service projects throughout the school year. Service projects are implemented in connection with instruction in the Principles of Social Justice and in the Corporal Works of Mercy.

Our Lady of Lourdes School is a 2015 National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence, a 2017 and 2018 Best of Bethesda School, and accredited by AdvancED/Cognia.

Why We Love our Catholic School

  • Our History

Our Lady of Lourdes School will celebrate its 82nd anniversary in 2023. We are located in a three-story brick building in downtown Bethesda, Maryland, just a block from the Bethesda Metro station. All classrooms are large, bright and airy. The past ten years have been years of growth and change for Our Lady of Lourdes School.

  • OLOL Establishment

The parish was established in 1926, and its first pastor was Father James J. O’Connor. He purchased the building and land from the Chinese Embassy, which had used it as its summer residence. The upper floors were converted into the rectory, and Masses were held on the ground floor. On March 16, 1930, the first Confirmation was administered by Archbishop Michael J. Curley. As the congregation grew, so did its needs. More land was purchased, as well as another building. In the spring of 1940, the plans for the three-story building now housing Our Lady of Lourdes School were begun in earnest, and the school building was completed in January of 1941.

  • Expansion

There were eight classrooms, a kindergarten and a library; the auditorium at the rear of the building could seat 600 people; this was used as the church for Our Lady of Lourdes Parish. On September 5, 1941, 236 students enrolled in the first registration of the school. Tuition was $25 a child. The first graduation was held in June of 1942 with thirty-one graduates. By 1944, the enrollment had reached 484, and by 1955, enrollment was up to 1052 students. The Provincial of the Franciscan Sisters of Glen Riddle, from Glen Riddle, PA, staffed the new school. They lived in the large convent which was adjacent to the school building.

Father Elmer T. Fisher was appointed the third pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes in November of 1945. He took a special interest in the children and was a familiar figure in all classes. It was under Father Fisher’s direction that the new wing of the school was begun in 1950, the same year he began renovations in the Church. Both the new wing of the school and the new Church were dedicated in May of 1951.

  • Development

As other areas built new churches and formed new parishes, the number of parishioners and the enrollment in Our Lady of Lourdes declined through the seventies and eighties.

In the late nineties, enrollment hit an all-time low, and there were concerns about the stability of our parish school. Things turned around dramatically with new leadership and programs, going from 100 students to 275 within five years. At this time, Our Lady of Lourdes School is thriving; having room for only a few more students in specific classes. The school enjoys a solid academic and social outreach reputation that is due, in large part, to a strong parent community and a faculty who are dedicated to ensuring that Lourdes’ students live their faith in today’s world. Our Lady of Lourdes School was named a 2015 National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence and a Best of Bethesda School this past year.

  • Facilities

In 2004 the school’s cafeteria was redone by upgrading the service line, installing new lighting fixtures as well as new, and much larger, windows. The teacher’s lounge was renovated, as well, and moved to the main floor of the building, thus ensuring easy access and a certain place of community for teachers and staff. In the summer of 2010, we enlarged and enhanced the new Library Media Center area, and an accessible entrance was added to the main floor of the building. In 2011, a magnificent turf field and the beautiful Luke's Garden were completed. In 2014 a new Sport Court outdoor basketball court and a large decked area were completed outside. In the summer of 2014, new windows were installed in the gym, and air conditioners were installed in the cafeteria. In the summer of 2015 two bathrooms and a hallway outside the Little Group classroom were renovated.

  • Facilities

In 2016, the playground equipment was replaced and a new playground surface was installed. In the summer of 2017 the area behind the gym was rebuilt to include a classroom and a meeting space. At the end of the current school year two new benches were placed next to our field and basketball court. One was dedicated to the work of our Principal, Mrs. McGann, who has retired after 13 years of loving and faithful service to our school. The other bench was a replacement for Ms. Truax's bench that we hope will continue to bring years of enjoyment to our community.

  • Technology

Technology changes continue, school-wide WiFi has been established, Kindergarten through 3rd grade students have access to 1:1 iPad use, students in grades 4-8 have access to 1:1 Chromebooks for their classes as needed. In the fall of 2019, we opened our STREAM lab. We renovated a classroom on the main floor, added Sphero robots, circuit technology, iPads, new furniture and storage, and much more. Teachers integrate science, technology, religion, engineering, art and math through investigations, hands-on activities, and design engineering.

Catholic Identity

Our Lady of Lourdes School exists to develop the moral, intellectual, social and physical potential of each child in the school. In this venture, the school shares responsibility with the family and the Catholic Church. Our Lady of Lourdes School is a community of faith composed of parents, students, clergy, staff, and teachers. We strive to guide each child as he or she grows and matures in knowledge and in faith. The school community is enriched by the presence of students from a variety of family backgrounds, faiths, nationalities and cultures.

An appreciation of the liturgy is developed through weekly participation in the Mass and through daily religious instruction and prayer. Preparation for Reconciliation and First Holy Communion form the core of religious instruction in grade 2, and preparation for Confirmation takes place in grade 8. All students participate in the liturgy and prayer, however, only Catholic students receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation, Holy Eucharist, and Confirmation. Opportunities are made for those students and parents who wish to study for and receive the Sacrament of Baptism and be welcomed into the Catholic Church.

We believe that the parent is the primary educator of the child. In this regard, parents are urged to model and practice their faith by regularly attending Sunday Masses and by fostering the practice of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The faculty shares this responsibility by modeling prayer, reflection, and charity in the classroom, and by facilitating character development.
